Infected Ingrown Toenail Treatment

Description:

An Ingrown Toenail (Onychocrytosis), occurs when the edge of the nail grows into the surrounding skin (sulci) of the toe. Causing swelling and redness, then pain and then infections if left untreated. Unfortunatley, a lot of the time once these start, they are hard to prevent from coming back however, we have some maintenance solutions and also permanent treatment solutions.

Causes:

Commonly caused by a mixture of trauma and genetic nail shape. Some people are more predisposed to having ingrown toenails due to the shape of the nail and/or toe.

However, they can also be caused by improperly cutting the nail, trauma (kicking, dropping something on it, hiking etc), fungal infections.

Symptoms Redness, Swelling, Pus,  Pain

Risks if left untreated:

Infection – surrounding skin may beciomie infected leading to cellulitis or abscess formation.

Chronic Pain – Persistent discomfort impairing mobility and quality of life.

Complications in Diabetics – Increased risk of serious infections including ulcers and bone infection (osteomyelitis) and amputation.

Stages of conditions

Condition StagePhotoResolution TimeNotes
Acute

3 days to 14 days

Conservative treatment can resolve early stage ingrown toenails, recovery lengthened if infection present.

Sub-acute
7-14 days
Depending on the treatment chosen, this can be resolved. Recovery lengthened if infection is present and high activities.
Chronic

6 –12 weeks
Chronic onychocryptosis requires nail surgery or very regular conservative treatment with  local anaesthetic. The healing time of Nail surgeyr depends on the individual’s health and how they good their own self post operative care is. Recovery lengthened if infection is present and high activities.

Type of Nail Surgery

Partial Nail Avulsion (PNA)

PNA is a minor surgical procedure  to remove a narrow strip of 1 side of the toenail. This is the ideal permanent treatment for ingrowing toe nails or involuted nails (which dig into the toe, causing pain or infections). It does not require stitches and is usually fully healed within 4-6 weeks.

Partial Nail Avulsion (PNA)

  • Minor surgical procedure to remove a narrow strip of 1 side of the toenail.
  • Quick and painless.
  • No stitches required.
  • Usually heals within 4-6 weeks.
  • Ideal permanent treatment for ingrowing toe nails or involuted nails, which dig into the toe.

Total Nail Avulsion (TNA)

TNA is a minor surgical procedure to remove the whole toenail, with the option to permanently prevent nail regrowth. This method of whole nail removal is more favourable than those carried out by orthopaedic surgeons, as it does not require stitches, recovery is quicker (within 6-8 weeks) and there is a lower chance of nail regrowth.

  • Post operative recovery for TNA is quicker than procedures carried out by orthopaedic surgeons

Bilateral Partial Nail Avulsion

Bilateral PNA is a minor surgical procedure to remove 2 narrow strips on either side of one toenail. This treatment is the ideal permanent solution to retain as much of the healthy nail while removing both problematic, curved sides. It does not require stitches and is usually fully healed within 4-6 weeks.
